The Flores Sea is a vital gateway to the world's most biodiverse marine region.
In short: Nestled between the islands of Sulawesi, Flores, and Sumbawa, the Flores Sea serves as a critical entry point into the Coral Triangle. This vast marine expanse is not just a geographical feature; it is a gateway to a global biodiversity hotspot currently facing unprecedented environmental pressure and conservation efforts.
The Flores Sea, covering approximately 240,000 square kilometers, acts as a northwest conduit via the Makassar Strait into the broader Pacific. It sits at the edge of the Coral Triangle, a massive marine region spanning 6 million square kilometers. This triangle is a biological powerhouse, hosting roughly three-quarters of the world’s coral species and over 2,200 species of reef fish. Its significance is underscored by the fact that it contains about one-third of all global coral reefs.
Despite its ecological importance, the region is under severe strain. While 75 percent of coral reefs globally face threats, approximately 95 percent of the reefs within the Coral Triangle are considered at risk. These dangers include overfishing, pollution, ocean acidification, and thermal stress from rising temperatures. Destructive practices like blast fishing and physical damage from shipping further exacerbate the decline. As of 2013, fewer than 3 percent of these critical reefs were protected.
In response, the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) was established on May 15, 2009, when six heads of state met in Manado, Indonesia. They adopted a 10-year Regional Plan of Action aimed at balancing societal needs with ecosystem health. The initiative focuses on improving the management of marine protected areas and fisheries, while helping coastal communities adapt to the realities of a changing climate. Some ecologists now advocate for expanding the protected boundaries to include surrounding seascapes near Singapore and Borneo to ensure the long-term survival of these vital marine habitats.
