The engineering of a car that was designed to disappear
In short: The fourth-generation Ford Focus was a masterclass in structural refinement, featuring a chassis 20 percent stiffer than its predecessor. Yet, despite its technical evolution, the model has seen a dramatic geographic retreat, becoming a casualty of shifting global priorities and trade tensions.
Launched in April 2018, the Mk4 Focus was engineered on the Ford C2 platform. This evolution provided a significant 20 percent increase in torsional rigidity over the previous C1 platform. To balance this strength with agility, Ford reduced the car's weight by up to 88 kg (194 lb) and extended the wheelbase by 53 mm (2.1 in). These changes allowed designers to position wheels higher into the sheet metal, creating a visual profile that masked the car's actual mass.
While the car offered diverse configurations—ranging from the rugged, 30 mm (1.2 in) lifted 'Active' crossover to the luxury 'Vignale' trim with Bang & Olufsen audio—its market reach was systematically pruned. In North America, the model was cancelled in August 2018 due to U.S.
tariffs on Chinese-manufactured exports. Similarly, production was halted in Thailand due to low sales, effectively restricting the Focus to a smaller footprint of markets including Europe, China, and Australasia. The era of the Focus is nearing a definitive end. Ford of Europe plans to cease production in 2025 as the company pivots toward electric vehicles. This transition is so significant that Ford is currently investigating the future of its Saarlouis factory in Germany, considering a sale to another manufacturer once the Focus line is officially discontinued. The car's journey from a global staple to a regional specialty highlights the rapid consolidation of the automotive industry.
