Why the Dallas Cowboys now command a staggering thirteen billion dollar valuation
In short: The landscape of elite sports ownership has shifted dramatically, with American football leagues now dominating the financial hierarchy. While global soccer clubs once held the top spots, the Dallas Cowboys have maintained a decade-long grip on the number one position, reaching a record-breaking valuation that reflects a massive surge in market value.
As of December 18, 2025, the Dallas Cowboys hold the top spot on the Forbes list of most valuable sports teams, a position they have occupied consistently since 2016. Their current valuation of $13 billion marks a significant milestone, as they were also the first team to break the $4 billion barrier in 2016. This dominance is part of a broader trend where the National Football League (NFL) has consolidated its financial power, placing 30 of its 32 teams within the top 50 global rankings.
The collective value of the top 50 teams has reached over $353 billion, representing an average of $7.1 billion per team. This figure is 22% higher than in 2024 and more than double the valuation levels seen just four years prior. This rapid appreciation has fundamentally altered the composition of the list. Soccer, which previously boasted a stronger presence, now accounts for only four of the top 50 teams, down from seven in each of the preceding two years. Notable clubs like Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain have fallen out of the rankings entirely.
The shifting dynamics are further illustrated by the turnover in the top 50. While the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and Miami Heat have recently entered the list, other established franchises have been displaced. Formula 1 has seen a resurgence, with Ferrari and Mercedes re-entering the top 50 after being unranked in 2024. Meanwhile, other leagues such as the NHL and MLS have struggled to place teams in the top tier, despite high individual valuations like the Toronto Maple Leafs at $4.4 billion and LAFC at $1.25 billion. This concentration of wealth underscores the NFL's unique position in the modern sports economy.
