At 4,900 feet, this Texas town holds the record for the highest county seat
In short: Nestled at the foot of the Davis Mountains, Fort Davis is a high-altitude community defined by its rugged landscape and astronomical significance. While it began as a military outpost in 1854, it has evolved into a unique census-designated place that balances desert climate extremes with world-class scientific research facilities.
Located in the southeastern corner of Jeff Davis County, Fort Davis sits at the southeastern base of the Davis Mountains. Its elevation of 4,900 feet makes it the highest county seat in Texas. This altitude significantly influences the local environment, creating a semiarid climate characterized by cool, dry winters and hot, wet summers. The area is also known for a high degree of diurnal temperature variation, where the difference between daily highs and lows is pronounced due to the elevation.
The community’s history is rooted in the mid-19th century. Established in 1854 along the San Antonio–El Paso Road, the original fort was named for Jefferson Davis, who served as secretary of war under President Franklin Pierce. Following the Civil War, the site was re-established in 1867. Today, the town serves as a hub for both history and science. It is home to the McDonald Observatory of the University of Texas and hosts one of the ten dishes that make up the Very Long Baseline Array, a massive radio telescope system.
Modern Fort Davis spans 10.1 square miles of land. According to the 2020 census, the population was 1,024, a decline from the 1,201 residents recorded in 2010. The community is served by the Fort Davis Independent School District, and the entire county is zoned to Odessa College. Beyond its academic and military connections, the area features the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens, highlighting the diverse ecological character of this high-desert region.
