In short: Imagine a landscape where towering rainforests grow directly on massive sand dunes, and freshwater lakes sit perched high above the ocean. This is K'Gari, a geological marvel in Australia where shifting sands, ancient aquifers, and unique biological processes collide to create a wilderness unlike any other on Earth.

K'Gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is a 122-kilometer-long landmass off the east coast of Australia. Covering 181,851 hectares, it holds the distinction of being the world's largest sand island. Its geography is defined by a complex interplay of geological forces, most notably longshore drift, which contributes to the evolution of its immense sand dunes. Global coastal dune systems find their most extensive and intact chronological progression here, illustrating a persistent record of shifting environments.

One of the island's most striking features is the superimposition of active parabolic dunes over older dunes deposited during periods of low sea level. These older formations are stabilized by majestic remnants of tall rainforest, which reach elevations of up to 240 meters.

This specific development of rainforest vegetation on coastal dune systems at this scale is considered a unique phenomenon. Additionally, the island contains the world's largest unconfined aquifer on a sand island, which interacts dynamically with the surrounding landscape. The island is also a sanctuary for freshwater dune lakes, hosting half of the world's total count of these perched bodies of water. The relationship between the coastal dune sand mass, the aquifer hydrology, and these lakes creates a unique sequence of lake formation across different spatial and temporal scales. Visitors can explore over 250 kilometers of clear sandy beaches, including more than 40 kilometers of strikingly colored sand cliffs and spectacular blowouts, all within a wilderness accessible only by foot or four-wheel drive.
