In short: Before the global success of Bachman–Turner Overdrive, Fred Turner was a Winnipeg musician rejected by his own band for wanting to play original music. His transition from a cover artist to a rock icon fundamentally reshaped the sound of 1970s arena rock.

Fred Turner’s trajectory began in the Canadian music scene, where he played in over a dozen bands around Winnipeg. A pivotal moment occurred in 1971 when Randy Bachman invited him to join Brave Belt based on a recommendation from Neil Young. At the time, Turner was performing with a cover band called the D-Drifters. The group repeatedly rejected his original compositions because they wanted to stick to covers; Turner eventually left to pursue the chance to perform original material with Bachman. The evolution of the band's sound is directly attributed to Turner’s加入. While the first Brave Belt album was primarily country-rock, Robbie Bachman noted that the addition of Turner’s heavy, rough voice shifted the musical identity entirely.

Turner himself described his contribution as bringing a 'hard edge' to what had been a more countryish style. This shift was instrumental in the band rebranding as Bachman–Turner Overdrive (BTO) after signing with Mercury Records. Between 1973 and 1976, BTO reached peak popularity, releasing five Top 40 albums and numerous hits like 'Takin' Care of Business.' Turner was a central figure in this success, composing and singing lead on several chart-topping tracks. He remains the only member to appear on every album released by the band. Even after Randy Bachman departed in 1977, Turner continued as a primary creative force, eventually retiring from touring in March 2018 at the age of 74.

The legacy of BTO is defined by its commercial reach and critical recognition. The group won three consecutive Juno Awards for Group of the Year between 1974 and 1976. Their signature hit, 'Takin' Care of Business,' reached number 12 on the US charts and number 3 in Canada. In 2014, Turner was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as part of the Not Fragile-era lineup, cementing his status as a cornerstone of Canadian rock history.
