How Gabi Garcia became one of the most decorated grapplers in history
In short: Gabi Garcia is a titan of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boasting a record that includes nine World Jiu-Jitsu Championships and four ADCC gold medals. Her path from a teenager in São Paulo to an IBJJF Hall of Fame inductee is defined by dominance, high-profile transitions to MMA, and a relentless competitive spirit.
Born in Porto Alegre in 1985, Gabrielle Lemos Garcia initially explored sports like volleyball and field hockey before moving to São Paulo at age 13. It was there that her uncle introduced her to jiu-jitsu, setting her on a trajectory that would eventually lead her to the Alliance team under the tutelage of Fabio Gurgel. Her lineage in the sport is extensive, tracing back through a direct line of masters including Hélio Gracie and Mitsuyo Maeda.
Garcia’s career is marked by extraordinary success in the female black belt divisions, though it has not been without controversy or challenge. In 2013, she faced a disqualification after testing positive for Clomiphene, though she was later found not at fault. Her competitive evolution saw her transition into mixed martial arts with the Rizin Fighting Federation, where she secured multiple victories via TKO and submission. By 2023, she had also expanded her martial arts repertoire by earning a black belt in judo.
The later stages of her career have seen significant shifts, including her retirement from IBJJF competition following a 2021 loss to Yara Soares—the first time she had been submitted in her black belt career. Garcia has remained active in high-profile grappling events, including intergender superfights and ADCC championships. Beyond the mat, her life has been marked by personal turbulence, including public allegations of abuse against her former spouse, and professional recognition, such as her 2024 inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records.
