How a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prodigy became the UFC's strawweight queen
In short: Mackenzie Dern has been training since age three, evolving from a world-class grappler into a dominant UFC champion. From defeating male black belts on Japanese television to securing the strawweight title, her journey is defined by technical mastery and an unbreakable connection to her Brazilian roots.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Brazilian parents, Dern's combat identity is deeply rooted in her heritage. She mentioned that Portuguese is now her main language, observing that her combat-related thoughts happen mostly in Portuguese. This linguistic and cultural immersion mirrors her technical evolution; she began training at age three under her father, Megaton Dias, and her stepmother, Luciana Tavares, a black belt.
Dern's ascent is marked by historic technical feats. She stands alone as the only woman in Jiu-Jitsu to secure black belt gold at all five major IBJJF Gi Championships: the Worlds, Euros, Pan Ams, Brazilian Nationals, and the Asian Open. Her grappling prowess was further highlighted when she defeated Gabi Garcia despite a significant weight difference, and later, when she became the first woman in UFC history to finish a fight using a leg lock during her 2020 victory over Hannah Cifers.
In the UFC, Dern has established herself as a premier submission specialist, holding the record for the most submission wins in the women's strawweight division with five. As of August 18, 2026, she is ranked #5 in the UFC women's pound-for-pound rankings and holds the UFC Women's Strawweight Championship. Her career has been punctuated by high-level performance, earning her multiple 'Performance of the Night' and 'Fight of the Night' honors, and tying Ronda Rousey for the second-most post-fight bonuses in UFC women's history.
Despite her success, her path has not been without friction. She has faced challenges with weight management, including a 2018 bout against Amanda Cooper where she weighed 123 pounds—seven pounds over the non-title limit—resulting in a 30% purse fine. She also navigated a hiatus for maternity leave in 2019, returning to the cage to continue her ascent toward championship gold.
