The sailor who became the revolutionary hero of two worlds
In short: Explore the life of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the charismatic revolutionary whose military expeditions were pivotal to the unification of Italy. This documentary traces his journey from a sailor in the Americas to a founding father of a nation.
Born in Nice in 1807, Garibaldi first earned the title "Hero of Two Worlds" for his revolutionary military service in Brazil and Uruguay. Upon returning to Europe, he joined the cause of Giuseppe Mazzini and defended the Roman Republic in 1849.
In 1860, Garibaldi led the "Redshirts"—a volunteer force of the Thousand—on an expedition to Sicily. With the consent of King Victor Emmanuel II, this movement secured the annexation of southern Italy and led to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Following his triumphs, Garibaldi's efforts to capture Rome were defeated at Mentana in 1867 and Aspromonte in 1862, preceding his 1882 passing.
