The versatile character actor who mastered the art of Shakespearean comedy
In short: From the Royal Shakespeare Company to the sunbed shops of Benidorm, Geoffrey Hutchings possessed a rare range. He could command the stage with a singing voice or disappear into the role of a corrupt contractor, leaving behind a legacy that spanned decades of British screen and stage.
Born in Dorchester, Dorset, on 8 June 1939, Geoffrey Hutchings followed a diverse academic path. After studying French and Physical Education at the University of Birmingham, he refined his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His professional journey reached a significant milestone in 1968 when he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, a tenure that lasted through the 1980s.
Hutchings became particularly renowned for his comedic timing and vocal ability. He inhabited iconic Shakespearean characters such as Bottom, Feste, and Dromio of Syracuse. His musicality was a key asset, notably earning him a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance in 1982 for his role as Lady Dodo in the musical Poppy. His repertoire also extended to darker, more complex roles, such as playing Bosola in the 1971 production of The Duchess of Malfi.
His television and film career was equally prolific, ranging from the gritty realism of 'Our Friends in the North' (1996), where he played the corrupt John Edwards, to the popular sitcom 'Benidorm'. In the latter, he played Mel Harvey, a man owning five sunbed shops in Greater Manchester. His sudden death from meningitis on 1 July 2010 necessitated significant script rewrites for the 'Benidorm' Christmas special, as his character was written out as having died on a business trip abroad.
Throughout his career, Hutchings shared the screen and stage with industry titans, appearing alongside Michael Gambon in both 'Maigret' and Beckett's 'Endgame', and working in films with Kenneth Branagh and Clint Eastwood.
