The lost epic of House Forrester and the fate of Ironrath
In short: Before Telltale Games closed its doors, it attempted to expand the Westeros mythos. This episodic adventure allowed players to navigate the political wreckage of the War of the Five Kings, controlling five different characters to determine if a forgotten northern house could survive the shifting tides of power.
Released in 2014, the Game of Thrones episodic series by Telltale Games was designed as a graphic adventure rather than a prequel. Instead of revisiting the origins of known legends, the story takes place concurrently with the television series, spanning the period between the end of season three and the start of season five. The narrative focuses on House Forrester, a family briefly mentioned in George R. R. Martin's 'A Dance with Dragons' but largely new to the screen.
The gameplay centers on the survival of the Forresters, rulers of the fortress Ironrath located within the Wolfswood. The family's wealth and military importance stem from their control of valuable Ironwood groves. Players navigate through six episodes, switching between the viewpoints of five playable characters. While the core story arc remains fixed, player decisions trigger significant consequences, altering the behavior and presence of non-player characters in later scenes. Each episode features five critical decision points where players must choose between two options, with the game even tracking these choices against the global player base.
Despite the creative ambition, the project's future remains uncertain. A second season was planned but was halted in 2017 due to restructuring at Telltale Games. Following the majority studio closure in September 2018, the series was officially cancelled. Although the company returned in August 2019, no new developments regarding the series have been announced as of August 2022.
