In short: Most encyclopedias are static archives, but one creator decided to map the entire world through the lens of digital storytelling. By profiling every United Nations-recognized country in alphabetical order, this project turned a YouTube channel into a comprehensive travel encyclopedia for millions.

Paul 'Barbs' Barbato launched Geography Now with a specific ambition: to create a visual atlas that covers every single UN-recognized nation. The journey began on October 15, 2014, with a profile of Afghanistan. This marked the start of an alphabetical expedition intended to move beyond simple fact-sharing to illustrate what it actually feels like to be a person from a specific country.

The project's structure is built on four pillars: political geography (sovereignty and borders), physical geography (landscapes and resources), demographics (culture and people), and 'the friendzone,' which Barbato uses to describe complex diplomatic relationships. Each episode also weaves in cultural touchstones like food, music, and sport to provide a holistic view of each nation.

The series is a product of both personal history and digital community. Inspired by growing up in a diverse Chicago neighborhood where children shared stories of their home countries, Barbato used the atlas as his primary learning tool. Because he lacked the funds for traditional travel, he developed a studio-based format that relies on visual learning and deep research.

What makes this project unique is its collaborative nature. With over three million subscribers, the community acts as a global research team, providing information and planning insights. This has even led to real-world connections, such as flying out Keri Ann from Tuvalu to co-host an episode, bridging the gap between digital content and authentic human interaction.
