Beyond the headlines lies the cradle of human civilization
In short: While modern news often focuses on conflict, the land of Iraq holds the blueprints for organized society. From the world's first cities to the rise of great empires, this southwestern Asian nation contains a history far deeper than recent decades of instability suggest.
Long before the modern borders of Iraq were drawn, the region was known as Mesopotamia, or the "Land Between the Rivers." This fertile area, part of the broader Fertile Crescent, featured expansive alluvial plains that supported the emergence of some of humanity's earliest organized societies, including the Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria civilizations. Over the centuries, these lands were absorbed into various imperial powers, including Greek and Roman dynasties, and became a cornerstone of the Islamic world after the 7th century.
The political architecture of the modern state emerged from the aftermath of World War I. The nation was formed by combining the Ottoman provinces of Mosul, Basra, and Baghdad. Although Iraq achieved formal independence in 1932, it remained under British imperial influence for twenty-five years. The 20th century saw significant upheaval, including the 1958 overthrow of the monarchy and the subsequent rise of the Ba'ath Party via a bloodless coup in 1968.
Under the leadership of Saddam Hussein, the country utilized its massive oil reserves—the second largest in the world, following only Saudi Arabia—to fund significant development and military expansion. However, this era also led to devastating conflicts, such as the eight-year war with Iran and the Persian Gulf War. Today, the Republic of Iraq is a multiparty republic with a population projected to reach over 53 million by 2030.
