In short: Saint Kitts and Nevis is a federated constitutional monarchy in the eastern Caribbean, holding the title of the smallest country in the Americas. Comprised of two distinct volcanic islands, this nation has transitioned from a sugarcane-dependent economy to one driven by tourism, all while maintaining a unique constitutional right to secede.

The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, also known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, consists of two islands in the Lesser Antilles separated by a channel called The Narrows. Saint Kitts, the larger of the two, is home to the capital, Basseterre, and features Mount Liamuiga, a volcanic peak rising 3,792 feet. Nevis, located just two miles southeast, is circular and dominated by the 3,232-foot Nevis Peak. Both islands are situated within a tropical hurricane belt, with the most active period for storms occurring between August and October.

The nation's economic landscape underwent a significant transformation in 2005 when the long-standing, nationalized sugarcane industry ceased operations due to declining international demand. Tourism has since emerged as the primary economic sector, supported by light manufacturing of goods like electronic equipment and batik-dyed fabrics. Despite these shifts, the country maintains a stable population, partly because high levels of emigration historically offset natural growth. The Eastern Caribbean dollar serves as the official currency, managed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.

Politically, the federation has been an independent member of the Commonwealth since 1983. It operates as a constitutional monarchy under the British monarch, represented by a governor-general. The federal structure is notable for granting the island of Nevis a high degree of autonomy; it maintains its own legislature and premier. The constitution even includes specific procedures that would allow Nevis to secede from the federation entirely, a rare provision in modern governance. Today, the country balances its federal identity with these internal political safeguards while navigating its role in the global economy.
