In short: Born in a small village in the formerly princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad rose to become a central figure in Indian governance. His career spans decades of ministerial service, leadership in the Rajya Sabha, and the recent launch of his own political party, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party.

Born in 1949 in Soti village, Doda district, Ghulam Nabi Azad pursued his education in Jammu and Srinagar, eventually earning a Master's in Zoology in 1972. His political trajectory began in 1973 as a secretary for the Block Congress Committee in Bhalessa. By 1980, he had ascended to the presidency of the All-India Youth Congress, marking the start of a long tenure in national politics that included multiple terms in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Azad served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008. His tenure ended when the coalition partner, the People's Democratic Party, withdrew its support, leading to his resignation in July 2008. Beyond state politics, he held several key portfolios in the central government, including Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Civil Aviation, and Minister of Health and Family Welfare. During his time as Health Minister, he focused on expanding the National Rural Health Mission, which mobilized half a million health workers across India.

In 2022, a significant shift occurred in his career. After decades with the Indian National Congress, Azad resigned from all party positions in August 2022, citing concerns over the internal consultative process. Shortly thereafter, he announced the formation of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party. His contributions to public life have been recognized with the Padma Bhushan, awarded in 2022, and the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 2015. Most recently, in 2023, he was appointed to a government committee tasked with exploring the feasibility of simultaneous polls across the country.
