From Himachal Pradesh legislator to a central architect of India's ruling political party
In short: Jagat Prakash Nadda has navigated a complex career spanning state-level governance and national leadership. As a long-term strategist for the Bharatiya Janata Party, he transitioned from local assembly roles in Himachal Pradesh to holding dual ministerial portfolios in the central government, all while shaping the party's national trajectory since 2020.
Born in Patna in 1960, Nadda began his political career in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, where he served multiple terms representing Bilaspur starting in 1993. His early career included cabinet positions in the state government, overseeing portfolios such as health, parliamentary affairs, and environmental science. By 2012, he shifted his focus to national politics, securing a seat in the Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Indian Parliament.
Nadda’s rise within the Bharatiya Janata Party was marked by his role as a key strategist and close associate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After serving as the party's national working president in 2019, he assumed the role of national president in January 2020, succeeding Amit Shah. His tenure as party chief was extended in 2022 to cover the 2024 general election cycle. In 2024, he transitioned his parliamentary representation from Himachal Pradesh to Gujarat.
His career has not been without controversy. During his time as Union Health Minister, which began in 2014, his tenure faced scrutiny regarding investigations into corruption at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Reports from 2017 alleged that he intervened to suppress inquiries into a major financial scandal. Additionally, in 2015, the Delhi High Court issued a formal inquiry regarding his involvement in these institutional matters. Despite these challenges, Nadda remains a central figure in the current administration, having taken charge of both the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers in June 2024.
Beyond his political life, Nadda maintains a background in law, having earned his degree from Himachal Pradesh University. His personal history includes a youth spent as a competitive swimmer representing Bihar. Today, he continues to hold significant influence as a primary decision-maker within the party structure, balancing his legislative responsibilities with his ministerial duties in the central government.
