In short: Founded in Bury St Edmunds over two centuries ago, Greene King has evolved from a local family business into the United Kingdom's largest managed pub company. Its expansion through aggressive acquisitions has brought both commercial dominance and significant public controversy, ranging from protests over local beer to modern calls for reparations.

The company traces its origins to 1799, when Benjamin Greene established a brewery in Bury St Edmunds. The business expanded significantly in 1887 through a merger with Frederick William King’s brewing firm, forming the entity known today as Greene King. Over the 20th and 21st centuries, the company pursued a strategy of rapid growth by acquiring numerous competitors, including the Spirit Pub Company in 2015 for £773.6 million. This acquisition solidified its position as the largest managed pub company in the UK, overseeing a portfolio that includes thousands of pubs, restaurants, and hotels.

This aggressive expansion has not been without friction. Critics, including beer protesters, have dubbed the firm "Greedy King" due to its history of buying out smaller, independent breweries and removing local guest beers from its pubs. The company has also faced backlash for rebranding schemes that involved replacing traditional pub signs and renaming historic venues, such as the 2021 dispute over the "The Black Bitch" pub in Linlithgow. Furthermore, the company’s legacy is under scrutiny; in January 2024, the nation of St Kitts and Nevis initiated talks regarding slavery reparations, citing founder Benjamin Greene’s historical ownership of 231 enslaved people.

Despite these challenges, the company remains a significant force in the British hospitality industry. In October 2019, the Hong Kong-based holding company CK Assets acquired Greene King, viewing its pub estate as a recession-proof asset. Today, the brewery continues to produce iconic cask ales, including Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale, while maintaining a visitor centre in Suffolk. The firm also invests in workforce development, having processed approximately 9,000 apprentices through its training programmes since 2011, reflecting a complex balance between its industrial scale and its deep-rooted history in British pub culture.
