The Scottish con man who invented a country and sold it to the British
In short: Gregor MacGregor was a soldier and adventurer who convinced hundreds of investors to fund a fictional Central American territory called Poyais. Between 1821 and 1837, he sold land certificates and government bonds for this non-existent nation, leading to a humanitarian disaster when settlers arrived to find only an empty, unforgiving jungle.
Born in 1786, Gregor MacGregor was a member of the Clan Gregor who rose through the ranks of the British Army before joining the Venezuelan War of Independence in 1812. His military career was marked by both genuine bravery and erratic behavior. He earned the title 'Xenophon of the Americas' for a grueling 1816 retreat across Venezuela, yet he also abandoned his troops during disastrous operations in New Granada in 1819. His penchant for self-aggrandizement was evident early on; after leaving the British service in 1810, he toured Edinburgh in an extravagant coach while falsely styling himself a baronet.
The Poyais scheme, arguably his most audacious deception, began in 1821 upon his return to Britain. MacGregor claimed that a local leader, King George Frederic Augustus of the Mosquito Coast, had appointed him 'Cazique' of Poyais, a supposedly developed colony. He marketed this fantasy with sophisticated brochures and government bonds, enticing about 250 settlers to depart for the region in 1822. Upon arrival, these emigrants discovered no infrastructure, only a desolate wilderness in Honduras. More than half of the settlers perished, a tragedy that eventually exposed the fraud to the British public.
Despite the catastrophic failure of the Poyais expedition, MacGregor’s ability to manipulate public perception remained potent. Even after the survivors returned in 1823, some victims defended him, blaming his subordinates for the disaster. MacGregor faced a fraud trial in France in 1826 but was acquitted, allowing him to continue smaller-scale versions of his schemes in London for another decade. He eventually returned to Venezuela in 1838, where he was surprisingly welcomed as a hero. He died in Caracas in 1845 at the age of 58, buried with full military honors in the city's cathedral, leaving behind a legacy as one of history's most brazen confidence tricksters.
