In short: History remembers him as the 'Scottish Robin Hood,' a noble thief fighting for the downtroobled. But the real Robert MacGregor was a notorious extortionist running a lucrative cattle-raiding protection racket, driven more by debt and blood feuds than by any sense of social justice.

Born in Glengyle in 1671, Robert MacGregor—nicknamed 'Rob Roy' for his red hair—was far more complex than the romanticized figure found in Sir Walter Scott’s 1817 novel. While Scott portrayed him as a principled thief, the historical MacGregor operated an extralegal 'watch' over the herds of Lowland gentry. In exchange for 'black mail' or protection money, he ensured cattle were not stolen; if they were, they were either retrieved or paid for in full.

His descent into outlawry was triggered by financial ruin and political retaliation. After a large loan intended to expand his herd vanished with a missing herder, MacGregor defaulted to his creditor, the Duke of Montrose. The fallout was bitter: MacGregor alleged that Montrose offered to forgive his debts if he would perjure himself to frame the Duke of Argyll for treason. When MacGregor refused, he was branded an outlaw, and his family was evicted from their home at Inversnaid.

His life was deeply entwined with the Jacobite cause. At just 18, he fought alongside his father at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. He later participated in the 1719 challenge at Glen Shiel, where he was badly wounded. Though arrested in 1722, a pardon from George I arrived five years later, potentially aided by the fame brought by Daniel Defoe’s 1723 biography, *The Highland Rogue*. He died in Balquidder at age 63, leaving behind a legend far more violent than the literature suggests.
