In short: Formed in 1983, Guided by Voices evolved from a local Dayton bar band into an indie rock institution. Led by the relentless Robert Pollard, the group is defined by its massive, sprawling discography, frequent lineup shifts, and a signature lo-fi aesthetic that transformed home-recorded snippets into a cult phenomenon.

Guided by Voices emerged from the 1980s lo-fi scene, utilizing four-track cassette production to create music known for its brevity and collage-like quality. While early releases like the 1992 album Propeller were pressed in tiny batches of only 500 copies, the band eventually gained national attention. By 1994, with the release of the indie landmark Bee Thousand, the core members retired from their day jobs to pursue music full-time, surprising audiences with high-energy live shows characterized by Pollard’s theatrical stage presence and the band's prodigious alcohol consumption.

The band’s history is marked by extreme volatility and a fluid membership. Over time, an estimated 50 to 60 people have passed through the group. The so-called classic lineup, which coalesced around 1993, eventually fractured due to the strains of heavy touring. Despite disbanding in 2004 and again in 2014, Pollard has consistently rebooted the project. He has frequently noted that there is little distinction between his solo work and the band’s output, famously stating that he and Guided by Voices are essentially the same entity.

Pollard’s output is staggering, with the band releasing 43 full-length albums. This prolific nature extends to his archival habits; the massive 2000 box set Suitcase, containing 100 songs, was the first of four such collections of unreleased material. Even after the band’s 2016 reboot, the pace of production remained relentless, with multiple albums often released within a single year. By 2017, the release of August by Cake marked Robert Pollard’s 100th album, cementing his status as one of rock's most tireless songwriters.
