In short: Stretching into the Kara Sea, the Gyda Peninsula is a vast, flat expanse of permafrost and tundra. Once a remote wilderness, it is now the site of intense industrial activity and mysterious geological shifts, from sudden methane-driven craters to massive mudslides triggered by the region's largest natural gas extraction projects.

Located in the Yamal-Nenets autonomous district of Russia, the Gyda Peninsula is a harsh, arctic landscape defined by its flat terrain, numerous lakes, and underlying permafrost. Measuring approximately 400 kilometers in length and 360 kilometers in width, it sits between the Ob and Yenisei river estuaries. The region is characterized by its tundra vegetation and subpeninsulas, such as the Mamonta and Yavay, which extend into the Kara Sea.

The environment has undergone significant changes in recent years. Since 2014, researchers have observed the emergence of massive craters, some nearly 100 feet wide, which are likely the result of methane gas blowouts. These geological events occur against a backdrop of record-breaking climate shifts; in 2020, the region experienced its warmest summer since records began in 1881. This warming has destabilized the landscape, leading to significant mudslides of permafrost into Gydan Bay.

Human activity is also reshaping the peninsula. In 2019, the fossil gas company PAO Novatek received permission to extract natural gas from much of the area. The subsequent Arctic LNG 2 project, which includes the construction of the Utrenneye port on the Gulf of Ob, has been linked by some to the recent mudslides. While the northernmost 8,782 square kilometers were designated as a nature reserve in 1996 and upgraded to a national park in 2019, the tension between industrial extraction and environmental preservation remains a defining feature of this remote Siberian frontier.
