In short: Born into the heart of the Assad regime, Hafez Bashar al-Assad was once groomed to inherit a presidency. Instead, he spent his youth competing in international mathematics olympiads, a passion that would eventually lead him to a doctoral degree in Russia after his family fled the collapse of their rule.

Born in Damascus on 3 December 2001, Hafez Bashar al-Assad is the firstborn child of ex-Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. While his father's presidency was defined by a long civil war and authoritarian rule, Hafez's early life was marked by a deep passion for mathematics. Between 2016 and 2018, he represented Syria in the International Mathematical Olympiad, competing in Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, and Cluj-Napoca. His inclusion on the national team drew scrutiny from observers who suspected nepotism, though Syrian government representatives defended his selection as the result of fair competition.

His academic journey took a significant turn toward Russia. Prior to enrolling at Moscow State University, he studied at Damascus's Higher Institute for Applied Sciences and Technology. He graduated with honors in 2023 with a master's degree in mathematics, completing his final two years of study in just one year. His research focused on number theory, a subject he continued to pursue through his doctoral dissertation, titled "Arithmetic Questions of Polynomials in Algebraic Number Fields," which he successfully defended in November 2024.

His prospects for stability disappeared when the Assad regime collapsed on 8 December 2024. Following the collapse, his family fled Syria to join him in Moscow, Russia. In the aftermath, Hafez used social media to describe the family's chaotic escape, noting that they had no backup plan for leaving Damascus. His sudden transition from a potential political successor to a refugee in Russia highlights the dramatic end of the Assad family's decades-long dominance in Syrian politics.
