In short: Hussein al-Sharaa is a Syrian economist whose life has been defined by political upheaval. From protesting Baathist coups in 1961 to navigating the complexities of the Saudi oil sector, his journey from Daraa to Egypt mirrors the turbulent history of modern Syria.

Born in 1946 in Daraa, Hussein al-Sharaa’s life has been shaped by the shifting political tides of the Levant. His family was displaced during the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights, a period that fundamentally altered his trajectory. After fleeing to Jordan, where he faced imprisonment, he eventually chose to study in Iraq under President Abdul Salam Arif, earning a degree in economics from the University of Baghdad and later a Ph.D.

Al-Sharaa's career has spanned the highest levels of the Middle Eastern energy sector. He served in the Syrian ministry of petroleum under Hafez al-Assad and later worked as an economic researcher for the Saudi Ministry of Petroleum from 1979 to 1988. His academic contributions to the field include several books published in the 1980s, such as 'Oil and Comprehensive Development in the Arab World' (1983) and 'OPEC 1960–1985: Major Transformations and Persistent Challenges' (1987).

His political involvement has been a constant thread. He was an active participant in the Damascus Spring and a signatory of the 2005 Damascus Declaration, which advocated for a democratic transition in Syria. Following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in March 2011, he resettled in Egypt. Today, he is recognized as the father of Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the forces that toppled the Assad regime in December 2024.

Despite his expertise, his commentary remains a lightning rod for controversy. In 2025, he faced backlash for remarks regarding social disparities between urban and rural communities, and he has offered nuanced, sometimes conflicting, views on the privatization of Syrian public institutions and the legacy of the Assad family's rule.
