How a London guitar donation sparked a global empire of rock and roll relics
In short: Founded in 1971 by two Americans in London, Hard Rock Cafe evolved from a simple eatery into the guardian of the world's largest private music memorabilia collection. From Eric Clapton's first guitar to a massive archive of 80,000 items, the brand’s history is as storied as the music it celebrates.
The Hard Rock Cafe story began on June 14, 1971, when Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton opened their first location on Old Park Lane in London. While the cafe initially featured eclectic decor, it gained its signature identity in 1979. Eric Clapton, a regular patron, requested that his un-signed Red Fender Lead II guitar be mounted over his favorite seat to secure it. Pete Townshend of The Who soon followed suit, contributing his own instrument with a note claiming his guitar was just as good. This playful exchange birthed a collection that now spans over 80,000 pieces, including rare photographs, tour costumes, and autographed instruments.
Ownership of the brand has shifted significantly over the decades. In 1990, The Rank Group acquired the chain, eventually gaining worldwide control after buying out regional interests in America and Canada. A major turning point occurred in March 2007, when the Seminole Tribe of Florida purchased the company for US$965 million. This acquisition led to the formation of Hard Rock International, which has increasingly pivoted toward casino hotels. Consequently, the company has shuttered numerous standalone cafe locations throughout the 2010s and 2020s, including sites in Detroit, Phoenix, Denver, and Chicago.
The brand's cultural footprint extends beyond its restaurants. It has inspired songs by Carole King and appeared on the back of The Doors' 1970 album, *Morrison Hotel*. However, the name has also led to legal friction, such as a dispute with a Heidelberg cafe that was forced to rebrand. Despite its global reach, the company has faced scrutiny, including 2008 allegations regarding wage practices in London and criticism for its decision to maintain business operations in Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Today, the chain continues to balance its legacy as a museum of rock history with its modern focus on large-scale hospitality and gaming properties.
