In short: Created in 1961, Katar Hol is a complex DC Comics figure whose origins have been repeatedly rebooted. Originally an alien lawman from the planet Thanagar, his story has shifted from space-faring adventures to reincarnated Egyptian royalty, reflecting decades of evolving editorial decisions and shifting comic book continuity.

Katar Hol first appeared in 1961 within the pages of The Brave and the Bold, introduced as an alien policeman from Thanagar. Alongside his wife, Shayera Thal, he arrived on Earth to capture a criminal, eventually adopting the identity of museum curator Carter Hall. This Silver Age version was defined by his use of advanced Thanagarian technology, specifically a hawk-like battle suit powered by Nth metal, which was developed by his father, the inventor Paran Katar.

The character's history became increasingly convoluted as DC Comics implemented various reboots. The 1989 miniseries Hawkworld by Timothy Truman reimagined Katar as a disillusioned officer from a society that exploited other worlds. Later, during the 1994 Zero Hour event, his identity merged with other versions of the hero, leading to a period of instability. By the 2011 New 52 relaunch, the character was re-established as a pacifist who accidentally fused with Nth metal after a tragic conflict with his adoptive brother, Corsar.

Beyond his shifting origins, Hawkman has been a member of the Justice League of America, where he was known for his conservative political views, often clashing with the liberal Green Arrow. His supporting cast and rogues' gallery have also evolved, ranging from museum colleagues like Mavis Trent to villains such as the Shadow Thief and the Matter Master. Despite these many iterations, the character remains a staple of the DC Universe, appearing in numerous alternate realities and spin-off series.
