The Batwing mantle has been held by two distinct heroes in DC Comics history
In short: Batwing is not a single person, but a technological legacy. Originally, the title belonged to a Congolese police officer fighting corruption in Africa. Later, it passed to a brilliant American engineer and martial artist. Both versions share the same high-tech suit, but their origins and missions differ significantly.
The first Batwing, David Zavimbe, debuted in 2011 as a representative of Batman Incorporated in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His backstory is rooted in tragedy; orphaned by HIV/AIDS, he and his brother were forced into service as child soldiers for General Keita. After escaping that life, Zavimbe became a police officer in Tinasha, dedicated to justice despite rampant corruption. Batman eventually recruited him to combat global threats like Leviathan, providing him with an advanced suit featuring jet propulsion and combat capabilities.
The character's narrative took a dark turn when he faced a villain named Massacre, who was eventually revealed to be his own brother, Isaac. This trauma, combined with the dissolution of a local superhero team called The Kingdom—which had failed to prevent a massacre of 50,000 people—pushed Zavimbe to briefly adopt lethal force. He eventually resigned from the role, leading to the introduction of the second Batwing, Luke Fox, in 2013.
Luke Fox, the son of Lucius Fox, brought a different dynamic to the mantle. A genius inventor and mixed martial artist, Luke utilized his immense wealth and access to Wayne Industries technology to upgrade the suit. His version of Batwing possesses capabilities such as invisibility, enhanced strength, and the ability to emit a sedative mist. Unlike Zavimbe, who was primarily tied to African operations, Luke has deep connections to Gotham City and has appeared across various media, including the Arrowverse series Batwoman and several animated films.
