In short: Founded in 1984 by Rick Hendrick, Hendrick Motorsports evolved from a modest racing startup into a dominant force in professional auto racing. By applying the operational discipline of his automotive dealership network to the track, Hendrick transformed how teams manage multiple entries, engine development, and pit crew training.

Rick Hendrick, who operates the Hendrick Automotive Group, established his racing organization as All-Star Racing in 1984. The team quickly proved its potential, securing its first victory that same year at Martinsville with driver Geoff Bodine. By 1985, the organization was rebranded as Hendrick Motorsports. Its rapid ascent was fueled by a commitment to innovation, particularly in engine construction and the professionalization of pit crew training. These technical advancements allowed the team to successfully manage multiple full-time entries, a strategy modeled after the efficient workflows found in Hendrick's car dealerships.

The team's historical significance reached a peak at the 2021 Coca-Cola 600. With a victory by Kyle Larson in the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Hendrick Motorsports secured its 269th Cup Series win, officially becoming the winningest team in the history of the series. This achievement surpassed the record of 268 wins previously held by Petty Enterprises, a benchmark that had stood since 1960. To date, the organization has accumulated a record 324 Cup Series race wins and 15 Cup Series owners and drivers championships.

Beyond its primary Cup Series efforts, the organization has maintained a complex ecosystem of development programs and technical partnerships. It has historically fielded entries in the Busch, Xfinity, and Craftsman Truck series, often serving as a training ground for future stars. The team also operates an in-house engine shop, providing technical support and engines to partners such as Spire Motorsports and the Haas Factory Team. This collaborative approach extends to international competition, including a 2023 entry into the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the team showcased a modified version of its NASCAR Cup car to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the sport.
