In short: In 1990, Chip Ganassi transformed the remains of Patrick Racing into a powerhouse. Since then, the organization has secured 18 open-wheel titles and over 275 wins across all categories, evolving from a single IndyCar entry into a multi-series racing giant.

The foundation of Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) was laid in 1990, following a strategic acquisition of assets from Patrick Racing. This move allowed Ganassi, a former driver whose career was cut short by a 1984 crash at Michigan, to enter the CART IndyCar World Series. The group climbed quickly; by 1996, they secured a landmark achievement, claiming four straight CART titles through drivers Alex Zanardi, Jimmy Vasser, and Juan Pablo Montoya.

The organization's influence extends far beyond IndyCar. CGR has competed in diverse series including NASCAR, the Rolex Sports Car Series, and the FIA World Endurance Championship. Their dominance is reflected in a massive trophy cabinet, featuring six Indianapolis 500 victories and wins in prestigious races like the Daytona 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans class. Their success is not limited to a single era; the team achieved another four consecutive IndyCar championships between 2008 and 2011.

Ganassi's business acumen is evidenced by his strategic expansions and exits. In 2001, he acquired a majority stake in Team SABCO to enter NASCAR, later merging operations with Dale Earnhardt, Inc. in 2009 to form Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. While the NASCAR program saw various owners and drivers—including Kyle Larson and Ross Chastain—the entire operation was eventually sold to Justin Marks' Trackhouse Racing Team following the 2021 season.

Today, the team remains a formidable force in the NTT IndyCar Series. In 2026, the organization's roster includes veteran champions like Scott Dixon and Álex Palou, alongside rising talents like Kyffin Simpson and James Roe, maintaining the legacy of excellence that began over three decades ago.
