In short: Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons didn't just lead a nation; she navigated a millennia-long cycle of divine punishment, magical theft, and radical forgiveness. From being tricked by Hercules to forging a daughter from clay, her story explores the heavy cost of maintaining a sanctuary of peace.

In the DC Comics mythos, Hippolyta’s reign is defined by a profound loss of power. Originally residing in 'Amazonia' during ancient Greece, the Amazons were stripped of their super strength and the favor of the goddess Aphrodite after the demi-god Hercules tricked Hippolyta into removing her magic girdle. This transgression forced the Amazons into exile on Paradise Island (Themyscira). To maintain their status, they were required to wear bracelets as a constant reminder of the folly of submitting to men, while Hippolyta held the girdle to ensure their immortality.

The character's origins have been reimagined across different eras. During George Pérez's 1987 redesign, the Aegean Sea's clay combined with reincarnated females, including Hippolyta. They were blessed by various goddesses with gifts like superhuman strength, wisdom, and beauty. However, their history is marred by a cycle of violence: after being drugged and enslaved by Heracles, the Amazons were granted immortality by Athena on the condition that they seek no retribution. When the Amazons broke this oath and slaughtered their captors, they were punished with a three-thousand-year vigil guarding 'Doom's Doorway' on a remote island.

Hippolyta’s most significant narrative arc involves the creation of Wonder Woman. Guided by an oracle, she formed a figure of an infant from the island's clay, which the goddesses then transformed into flesh and blood. Steve Trevor's parentage was eventually disclosed as being Diana. In a pivotal moment of growth, Hippolyta eventually moved from isolationism to cultural exchange, declaring Themyscira would open its doors to the world and appointing Diana as an ambassador to the United Nations.
