In short: Born from the souls of women murdered by men, the Amazons of DC Comics represent a radical vision of justice. From their origins as victims of Hercules to their existence on the hidden island of Themyscira, these immortal warriors have been reimagined through decades of shifting comic book realities.

The Amazons' origins vary significantly across DC Comics history. In the original 1942 depiction by William Moulton Marston, they were sculpted from clay by Olympian gods to serve as messengers of peace. However, a mid-1980s reboot during the 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' introduced a darker genesis: the goddess Artemis created them from the souls of women who died at the hands of men, granting them superhuman strength, speed, and immortality.

Their history is often defined by conflict with men. One version describes how Hercules, stung by taunts about his inability to conquer them, used deceit to steal Queen Hippolyta's magic girdle, leading the Amazons into slavery. After eventually reclaiming the girdle and defeating their masters, the Amazons were instructed by Aphrodite to leave the world of man entirely. They settled on Paradise Island—later known as Themyscira—to build a war-free culture, though they were required to wear heavy bracelets as a reminder to remain aloof from men.

The Amazons' status in the DC Universe has shifted through various reboots. In the 2011 'New 52' continuity, they were depicted as a race that periodically mated with outsiders. In the 'Flashpoint' reality, they were engaged in a devastating war with the Atlanteans in western Europe, a conflict that resulted in 12 million deaths. Through these iterations, the Amazons remain inextricably linked to Wonder Woman, who is often portrayed as the princess of their nation and a champion for justice.
