In short: Commissioned as a British warship, HMAS Perth became a symbol of Australian naval resilience during World War II. From the Mediterranean to the Pacific, she endured aerial bombardment and intense combat, only to meet her end in a final, desperate stand against the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1942.

Originally built as HMS Amphion for the Royal Navy, the cruiser was commissioned in 1936 and later transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1939. Designed under the 1932–1933 Naval Programme, the ship featured a unit-based propulsion system intended to prevent a single hit from immobilising her. She was heavily armed with eight 6-inch guns and eight torpedo tubes, protected by a 3-inch waterline belt. Her service life was defined by constant movement, patrolling the Atlantic and Caribbean before joining the Mediterranean Fleet in 1940.

In the Mediterranean, Perth participated in the Battle of Cape Matapan and supported evacuations from Greece and Crete, where she was badly damaged by aircraft in May 1941. After repairs and service in the Syria-Lebanon campaign, she returned to Australia. By February 1942, she was part of the American-British-Dutch-Australian Command, tasked with defending the Dutch East Indies. Her final engagement occurred at the Battle of the Java Sea, where she survived, only to be sunk by Japanese forces in the subsequent Battle of Sunda Strait.

The loss of the ship was catastrophic, with over half her crew killed in the battle. Of the survivors, only about two-thirds returned home after the war. The wreck was discovered in 1967, remaining largely intact until unauthorised salvage operations began stripping it in 2013. Today, the ship remains a poignant reminder of the naval conflicts that spanned the globe during the early 1940s, marking the end of a vessel that served as both a flagship and a frontline combatant.
