The tallest chimney ever voluntarily demolished once loomed over a Pennsylvania coal plant
In short: The Homer City Generating Station was a massive coal-burning facility that defined its landscape for decades. Beyond its power output, the site became famous for its record-breaking chimney and a turbulent financial history. Now, the decommissioned plant is being reimagined as a natural gas-powered data center campus.
Located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, the Homer City Generating Station occupied 2,400 acres and operated three coal-fired units. Units 1 and 2 began service in 1969, followed by Unit 3 in 1977. The facility was a significant source of regional power, but it also faced persistent financial instability, enduring two bankruptcies during the 2010s. By April 2023, ownership announced the plant would shut down, and it was permanently decommissioned on July 1, 2023.
The site was perhaps best known for its massive infrastructure, including a 1,217-foot chimney built in 1977. At the time of its demolition on March 22, 2025, it held the record as the tallest chimney ever demolished and the tallest freestanding structure ever voluntarily removed globally. The demolition was so complex that the initial attempt failed to bring the entire structure down. The site also managed the 1,800-acre Two Lick Reservoir, a water conservation facility integrated into the local watershed.
Throughout its operation, the plant was a major polluter, frequently ranking among the nation's top emitters of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. Despite the installation of pollution-control equipment in 1998 and 2012, the facility faced regulatory scrutiny, including a $200,000 fine in 2007 for violating water quality standards. Today, the site is at the center of a $15 billion redevelopment plan aimed at constructing a natural gas-powered data center. This transition has sparked community protests, highlighting ongoing tensions between industrial utility and environmental concerns.
