The complex lineage of a club born from multiple identities
In short: HNK Rijeka is more than just a modern Croatian football club; it is a sporting palimpsest. Its history reflects the shifting borders, regimes, and cultural identities of the Adriatic coast, evolving through mergers and rebrandings that span over a century of European history.
The roots of HNK Rijeka are deeply intertwined with the multilingual identity of the city of Fiume (now Rijeka) during its time as a corpus separatum within Austria-Hungary. The club's lineage began in 1904 with Club Sportivo Olimpia, a multisport organization whose football section first appeared in 1906. People of German, Hungarian, Croatian, and Italian descent made up the varied community of members throughout this period. Early competition arose against Club Sportivo Gloria, a team mostly backed by residents from urban labouring areas.
The club's identity has been reshaped by successive political regimes. In 1926, under the Fascist government of Italy, Olimpia and Gloria merged to form Unione Sportiva Fiumana. Following the collapse of Fascist Italy in 1943, official league competition ceased, and players were often caught in the crossfire of war—some joining the partisan resistance while others faced imprisonment or deportation. After World War II, as Yugoslavia reorganized sports into physical-culture societies, S.C.F. Quarnero (or Kvarner) was registered in 1946, inheriting the sporting traditions and stadium of Fiumana.
The club eventually adopted its current name, Hrvatski nogometni klub Rijeka, in 1995. While it has seen modern success—including domestic doubles in 2016–17 and 2024–25—its history is marked by significant controversy and resilience. This includes a disputed 1998–99 championship where an offside call was later challenged by 3D reconstruction, and allegations of state intelligence monitoring officials during that season. Today, the club balances its deep historical roots with modern ambitions, currently seeking public financing for a new project to replace its former home at Stadion Kantrida.
The club's reach extends beyond the pitch into community structure; by the 2025–26 season, it reported a record 18,439 members. Its rivalries also mirror its history, ranging from the 'Derby della Učka' against Istra Pula—which dates back to the late 1920s—to the older city derby with Orijent, rooted in clashes between Olimpia and Gloria.
