In short: The identity of Istra 1961 is a labyrinth of mergers, rebranding, and fan ultimatums. While often confused with its predecessor, the club has navigated a volatile history of ownership changes and name shifts to become a fixture in Croatian football, driven by the unwavering passion of its Demoni supporters.

The origins of Istra 1961 are frequently misunderstood. While many believe the club dates back to a 1961 merger, the current entity actually traces its roots to 1964, when it was founded as NK Uljanik. The confusion stems from a separate club, NK Istra, which was active in the top tier of Croatian football during the 1990s but eventually faded into the lower leagues. NK Uljanik remained in the shadows until its promotion to the Prva HNL in the 2003–04 season, marking the start of its rise as the premier club in Pula.

The mid-2000s were defined by a dizzying series of identity shifts. Between 2004 and 2007, the club cycled through five different names, including NK Pula 1856 and NK Pula Staro Češko, the latter reflecting a sponsorship deal with a brewery. The instability finally ended in 2007 when the fan group known as the Demoni issued an ultimatum: they would only support the club if it adopted the name Istra 1961 and returned to the traditional city colors of yellow and green. This demand cemented the club's current brand.

Since then, the club has undergone significant structural changes, passing through Russian and American ownership before being acquired by the Basque consortium Baskonia-Alavés Group in 2018. Despite the turbulence, the club has achieved notable milestones, including reaching the Croatian Cup final in 2021. Today, they play at the renovated Stadion Aldo Drosina, where they recently set a record attendance of 8,606 spectators in November 2023, proving that their deep-rooted connection to the city of Pula remains stronger than ever.
