The fjord where oxygen levels have plummeted to near-zero
In short: Hood Canal is a stunning natural waterway in Washington State, but beneath its surface lies an ecological crisis. While it serves as a vital marine habitat and naval base, the water is becoming increasingly uninhabitable for life due to a process that turns nutrients into a suffocating blanket.
Formed roughly 13,000 years ago via the Cordilleran Ice Sheet's Puget Lobe, this fjord-like waterway stretches towards the southwest for 50 miles from the gap between Tala Point and Foulweather Bluff. It serves as a critical corridor for marine life, including salmon that return annually to spawn in local rivers. However, since the 1970s, the canal has suffered from chronic hypoxia—a state where dissolved oxygen (DO) levels fall below what is necessary to sustain most marine life.
The mechanism of this decline is eutrophication. Runoff from septic tanks and degraded forests leaches nitrogen into the water, which triggers massive algal blooms in the warm, slow-turning waters of the southern end. When these algae die, bacteria consume them, exploding in population and robbing the water of its oxygen. While some factors are natural—such as seasonal stratification and wind patterns—human activity has accelerated the crisis. Oxygen levels in Hood Canal dropped from 5–6 mg/L during the 1950s to under 0.2 mg/L today, a figure significantly lower than the <2 mg/L hypoxia limit set by the National Research Council.
The consequences are devastating: eelgrass beds, which serve as vital nurseries for salmon and crab, have declined more here than anywhere else in Puget Sound. In 2010, a massive fish kill left thousands of shrimp and hundreds of fish washed ashore after oxygen levels dropped below 1 milliliter per liter. To combat this, the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program (HCDOP) was formed in 2005 to coordinate with 38 organizations to regulate anthropogenic practices like sewage runoff and restore wetlands to act as natural filters.
