How a remote Idaho town transformed from a dusty ferry crossing into nuclear history.
In short: Idaho Falls began as a simple river crossing for westward travelers, but it eventually became a vital hub for American nuclear research. While the city is now a regional center for healthcare and commerce, its identity remains deeply tied to the high-stakes scientific work conducted in the nearby desert.
The site was initially a quiet stop for pioneers, defined by a ferry on the Snake River established in 1864. It soon evolved into a bustling camp-town called Eagle Rock, fueled by the arrival of the Utah and Northern Railway in 1878. When the railroad shifted its operations to Pocatello in 1887, the town faced a near-fatal economic collapse. It was rebranded as Idaho Falls in 1891, and the subsequent construction of a hydroelectric plant turned the river's natural rapids into the namesake waterfalls that define the city today.
The city’s modern trajectory shifted in 1949 with the opening of the National Reactor Testing Station. This facility, now known as the Idaho National Laboratory, became a cornerstone of the regional economy. It achieved a major milestone in 1951 when a reactor produced electricity for the first time. However, the site also saw a tragic event in 1961, when a design flaw at the Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One led to a massive power surge. The resulting steam explosion caused the only fatal nuclear accident in the United States, claiming the lives of three military personnel.
Today, Idaho Falls serves as a commercial and cultural anchor for Eastern Idaho. Beyond its industrial history, the city has cultivated a vibrant local scene, featuring an extensive river walk, historic downtown districts, and modern venues like the Mountain America Center. With a population of over 64,000 as of the 2020 census, it has successfully diversified its economy, balancing its agricultural roots and scientific legacy with a growing retail and entertainment sector.
