In short: Formed in Gothenburg in 1990, In Flames helped define the melodic death metal sound before shifting toward a more accessible, alternative style. Despite constant lineup changes and the departure of every original member, the band has sold over two million records and remains a dominant force in international heavy metal.

In Flames began as a side project for drummer Jesper Strömblad, who sought to compose more melodic music than his primary band, Ceremonial Oath, allowed. By 1993, he had established the first official lineup and secured a record deal by bluffing about the number of songs they had completed. Their debut, Lunar Strain, relied heavily on session musicians, as the group lacked a permanent vocalist until Anders Fridén joined in 1995. This era solidified their role as architects of the Gothenburg metal scene alongside peers like Dark Tranquillity.

The band's trajectory shifted significantly with their 2002 album, Reroute to Remain. By incorporating clean vocals and catchier choruses, they moved away from the aggressive growls of their early work. While this stylistic pivot drew criticism from purists, it successfully expanded their mainstream appeal and boosted commercial performance. This evolution continued through subsequent releases, including 2006's Come Clarity, which became their first number-one album on the Swedish charts, and 2023's Foregone, which earned them a Swedish Grammis Award.

Stability has been elusive for the group. Since 1995, only vocalist Anders Fridén and guitarist Björn Gelotte have remained constant, and no founding members have been present since Strömblad's departure in 2010. Despite this, the band has maintained a rigorous global touring schedule and continued to innovate, even hosting their own festivals. Their legacy is now shared with former members who have moved on to new projects, such as The Halo Effect, while the current iteration of In Flames continues to bridge the gap between their melodic death metal roots and modern alternative metal.
