In short: Founded by Bogotá's social elite in 1941, Independiente Santa Fe is more than just a local club. As the first Colombian team to win an international tournament outside the Americas, they have transformed from an amateur side into a global powerhouse.

Established on February 28, 1941, by graduates of the Gimnasio Moderno, Santa Fe began as an amateur team. Their early history was marked by significant figures, including coach Jack Greenwell, who led the side in 1942 before his death in November of that year. The club's identity is deeply tied to Bogotá, playing home matches at the El Campín stadium, a venue inaugurated in 1938 and later expanded to a limited capacity of 48,000 for security reasons. The club's founders were primarily members of a high social class. Their inaugural match resulted in a scoreless draw against Universal.

The club holds a unique place in Colombian football history as one of only three teams to have played in every Categoría Primera A championship. Their competitive dominance is evidenced by twenty total titles, including ten national championships—the most recent being in 2025. They also secured the Copa Sudamericana in 2015, making them the first Colombian club to win an official tournament outside of the Americas. The squad also won the Suruga Bank Championship and the Copa Simón Bolívar. Additionally, they have claimed five Superliga Colombiana trophies.

Santa Fe's prestige was further recognized in 2015 by the IFFHS, which ranked them as the seventh best club in the world and the highest-ranked club in South America. This success followed a period of significant international competition, including deep runs in the Copa Libertadores, where they reached the semifinals in 2012 and 2013. Today, they maintain a fierce rivalry with Millonarios in the famous 'El Clásico Bogotano'. The team's traditional red and white colours were inspired by Arsenal. This was due to founder Luis Robledo's fondness for the English side.
