In short: Founded in 1958 by a group of friends, Independiente del Valle has transformed from a local team into a continental powerhouse. Known as the matagigantes, the club famously toppled South American titans to reach the 2016 Copa Libertadores final, proving that strategic youth development can overcome massive financial disparities.

Originally established as Club Deportivo Independiente by Jose Terán and his friends in Sangolquí, the club spent decades in lower divisions. It was not until 2007, after winning the Segunda Categoría, that the club adopted its current name and blue-and-black colors. By 2010, the team had secured promotion to the Ecuadorian Serie A, marking the beginning of a rapid ascent that would eventually reshape the landscape of South American football.

The club's reputation as the matagigantes, or killer of giants, was cemented during their improbable 2016 Copa Libertadores run. Despite long odds, they defeated Argentine powerhouses River Plate and Boca Juniors, the latter including a victory at the legendary La Bombonera. Although they fell to Atlético Nacional in the final, the performance drew global comparisons to Leicester City’s historic Premier League title that same year. They have since solidified their status by winning the Copa Sudamericana in 2019 and 2022.

Central to this success is a renowned youth academy that has produced talents like Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié, and Kendry Páez. This focus on development is supported by modern infrastructure, including the 12,000-capacity Estadio Banco Guayaquil, which opened in 2021. Unlike their previous home at Estadio Rumiñahui, this facility meets modern FIFA standards, allowing the club to host international matches on their own terms while continuing to challenge the traditional hierarchies of the sport.
