In short: In 2010, a high-stakes battle for creative control between Activision and Infinity Ward's founders triggered a massive legal war. The fallout didn't just change the studio; it birthed a new developer and sparked billion-dollar lawsuits that redefined the relationship between creators and publishers.

Founded in 2002 by Vince Zampella, Grant Collier, and Jason West, Infinity Ward was built by a core team of 22 former 2015 employees. Their first title, the World War II-themed Call of Duty, launched on PC in 2003. While Activision provided US$1.5 million for a 30% stake to kickstart development, the partnership took a dramatic turn following the massive success of the Modern Warfare series. The studio's initial success was bolstered by a significant increase in staff to 75 people to ensure console parity for Call of Duty 2. This expansion helped the title achieve an 85% attach rate for the Xbox 360.

The tension peaked in 2010 when Activision fired Zampella and West for "insubordination" and "breaches of contract." This move triggered a legal firestorm. The founders initially sued for unpaid royalties, with estimated claims rising from US$36 million to over US$1 billion by May 2012. Meanwhile, Activision countersued, alleging the pair were "self-serving schemers" and even named competitor Electronic Arts as a defendant for allegedly helping to "destabilize" the studio. The legal battle involved the IWEG, a group of current and former staff members, who sued for unpaid bonuses. They eventually reached a settlement with Activision for US$42 million.

The fallout was permanent. Zampella and West founded Respawn Entertainment in April 2010, taking several dozen former Infinity Ward employees with them. Despite the turmoil, Infinity Ward continued to dominate the market. The studio expanded significantly, merging with Neversoft in 2014 and growing to over 250 employees by 2015. Today, it operates across five global locations, including California, Texas, Poland, Mexico, and Spain, continuing to drive the massive Call of Duty franchise. The studio's footprint grew with the opening of a Kraków-based R&D centre in 2017 and a new Austin location in 2021. Most recently, a fifth site was established in Barcelona to support the franchise.
