In short: Spanning over 470 miles, Interstate 75 is Florida's longest highway. Its path across the state was not a straight line but a decades-long evolution, including a controversial toll road through the Everglades that was once dismissed by critics as nothing more than an alley for alligators.

The story of I-75 in Florida is one of massive adaptation. While the original 1956 federal plans envisioned the route terminating in Tampa, rapid growth in Southwest Florida during the late 1960s forced a rethink. By 1968, the government approved an extension to Naples and across the Everglades to Miami. This shift required incorporating the existing Everglades Parkway—a two-lane toll road that opened in 1968 and earned the nickname Alligator Alley from the American Automobile Association, who doubted its utility for anything other than local wildlife.

The transformation of Alligator Alley into a modern, four-lane interstate was a complex engineering and environmental undertaking. Completed in 1992, the project included extensive fencing and specialized culverts to allow the Florida panther and other wildlife to pass safely beneath the traffic. This segment remains one of only two tolled sections on the entire national I-75 route, which stretches from the Hialeah–Miami Lakes border all the way to the Canadian border in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The highway's development also reflects the shifting priorities of urban planning. In the Tampa Bay area, the route was famously reconfigured in 1973, swapping designations with I-275 to better manage through-traffic and bypass the city center. Today, the interstate is a high-tech corridor, utilizing fiber-optic intelligent transportation systems and data-sharing agreements with services like Waze to manage congestion. From the diverging diamond interchanges introduced in 2015 to the ongoing expansion of express lanes, I-75 continues to evolve to accommodate the millions of tourists and residents who rely on it daily.
