Interstate 85 is a diagonal anomaly that defies the standard American highway grid system
In short: While most major interstates ending in five are cross-country routes, Interstate 85 is a regional powerhouse serving the Southeast. Its path is uniquely diagonal, stretching from Alabama to Virginia. This orientation places it outside the traditional grid, creating a vital corridor that mirrors an ancient indigenous trading path.
Interstate 85 serves as a critical artery for the Southeastern United States, connecting major hubs like Atlanta and Charlotte. Although its odd number suggests a north-south orientation, the highway is physically aligned northeast-southwest. This diagonal trajectory is so pronounced that segments of the road actually sit west of Interstate 75, effectively breaking the standard interstate grid design. The route currently spans five states: Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
The history of the corridor runs deeper than modern asphalt. In its northern sections, the highway roughly follows an ancient trading route used by indigenous peoples, which was documented by colonial observers as early as the era of early European settlement. In more recent history, the road has undergone significant shifts. For instance, the section near Petersburg, Virginia, once served as the southern terminus for the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike, a toll road completed in 1958. Tolls on that segment were eventually removed in 1992 following the completion of Interstate 295.
The highway is also a site of significant infrastructure evolution and occasional disruption. In South Carolina, the road widens from four to six lanes near Anderson to accommodate regional traffic. In Georgia, the route faced a major challenge in March 2017 when a massive fire caused a bridge collapse in Atlanta, forcing a closure of roughly two miles of the interstate. Despite such events, the highway remains the backbone of the Piedmont Atlantic Megaregion, a sprawling urban corridor that continues to shape the economic geography of the American South.
