In short: He cut the Ring from Sauron's hand, yet chose to keep it. This pivotal moment of greed set the stage for the entire epic struggle of Middle-earth, transforming a moment of victory into a legacy of inherited failure.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, Isildur was the son of Elendil and a descendant of the half-elven Elros. After surviving the destruction of the island kingdom of Númenor, Isildur helped establish the realms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth. During the climactic Battle of the Last Alliance, Isildur used a shard of his father's sword, Narsil, to sever the One Ring from the Dark Lord Sauron's hand. However, rather than destroying the artifact in the fires of Mount Doom, Isildur claimed it for himself, an act of influence that many scholars suggest signaled an early addiction to the Ring's power.

Isildur's reign was short-lived. On 5 October, in the second year of the Third Age, his party was ambushed by Orcs near the Gladden Fields along the River Anduin. While some accounts suggest he was caught off guard in his camp, others describe a more tactical ambush where his small company of roughly 200 soldiers, including two dozen archers, was overwhelmed. In a desperate attempt to escape, Isildur used the Ring to become invisible, but the artifact betrayed him by slipping from his finger as he swam across the river. The bright Elendilmir gem he wore subsequently revealed his position, leading to his death by poisoned arrows.

The loss of the Ring fundamentally altered the course of history, as it eventually passed to Gollum and then to Bilbo Baggins. This cycle of loss and discovery provided the central theme for The Lord of the Rings. While later adaptations, such as the Middle-earth: Shadow of War video game, reimagine Isildur as a Nazgûl resurrected by Sauron, Tolkien's original narrative focuses on the 'inherited wrong' of his lineage. His descendant, Aragorn, would eventually seek to repair this failure by completing the quest to destroy the Ring.
