The imperialist Noah: How a refugee became a king of two realms
In short: Elendil did not just survive a catastrophe; he outlived an empire. While the island of Númenor drowned in a mythic flood, Elendil escaped with nine ships to found new kingdoms. He transformed from a fleeing refugee into a
Tolkien famously characterized Elendil as a "Noachian figure," drawing a parallel to the biblical Noah. However, literary scholars like Nicholas Birns distinguish the two: while Noah was a refugee, Elendil was an "imperialist" and a founder of realms. This distinction highlights a unique mythological hybrid—a survivor who didn't just preserve a people, but established a new political order in Middle-earth.
Elendil’s journey began as a leader of the "Faithful," a group loyal to the Valar who resisted the corrupting influence of Sauron and King Ar-Pharazôn. At the Second Age's conclusion, Elendil escaped Númenor's ruin after his father Amandil prompted him. He landed in Lindon, where he befriended the Elven King Gil-galad.
From this point, he established the northern realm of Arnor and its capital, Annúminas, while his sons founded the southern realm of Gondor. The legacy of Elendil is one of high-stakes sacrifice and lineage. Sauron's stronghold, Barad-dûr, was besieged by Gil-galad and Elendil throughout the Last Alliance of Men and Elves. They fought Sauron hand-to-hand, and both were killed, with Elendil's sword breaking beneath him. His son Isildur subsequently used that broken blade to seize the One Ring. This lineage continues through 40 generations of father-to-son descent, eventually reaching Aragorn, who repeated Elendil's original proclamation of staying in Middle-earth "unto the ending of the world.",
