In short: Unlike purpose-built tracks, the Isle of Man TT Mountain Course uses public rural roads and urban streets as its racing circuit. It is a high-speed odyssey that climbs to over 1,300 feet above sea level, weaving through villages, agricultural land, and mountain passes to test the limits of both man and machine.

It begins on Glencrutchery Road in the town of Douglas, navigating urban streets before heading into the countryside. The route passes through villages like Union Mills, Kirk Michael, and Ramsey, eventually reaching the highest point of the course near the 31st Milestone at a height of 1,385 feet (422 meters) above sea level.

The course's history is rooted in early 20th-century motoring. While racing began in 1904 with the Gordon Bennett Trial, the specific 'Mountain Course' layout evolved from various iterations. It was originally known as the 'Four Inch Course' in 1908, a name derived from Royal Automobile Club regulations limiting engine cylinder diameters to 4 inches. The current 37.73-mile distance was officially amended in 1938.

Safety and infrastructure have been constantly modified to accommodate the extreme demands of motorcycle racing. Significant works include the removal of sheep-gates, the widening of roads at locations like Signpost Corner and Governor's Bridge, and the demolition of structures like the Quarterbridge Hotel in 2008. In 2009, a grass bank was removed at Keppel Gate specifically to provide a run-off area following a practice crash and a serious incident involving a traveling marshal.

Today, the course remains a pinnacle of endurance. The outright lap record stands at 16 minutes and 36.115 seconds, an average speed of 136.358 mph (219.447 km/h). This record was set by Peter Hickman in 2023 on a BMW M1000RR Superstock bike, highlighting the incredible velocity maintained across the island's public roads.
