The Senegalese winger who chose growth over immediate glory
In short: When offered a move to one of football's biggest giants, Ismaïla Sarr turned it down. He chose the path of development over instant fame, a decision that paved the way for him to become a cornerstone of Senegal’s historic international success and a trophy winner in England.
Born in Saint-Louis, Senegal, Sarr began his journey at Génération Foot before moving to France. In 2017, he faced a pivotal career crossroads: choose a move to Barcelona or sign with Rennes. Sarr opted for the latter, stating that joining the Spanish giants was too early and that Rennes offered a better environment for him to reach his full potential. This decision proved fruitful; he won the Coupe de France in 2019, notably scoring the winning penalty in the final.
Sarr's career has been defined by high-impact moments across multiple leagues. At Watford, he was named Player of the Season in 2021 and famously ended Liverpool's 44-match unbeaten run with two goals and an assist in February 2020. His journey continued through Marseille before he returned to England to join Crystal Palace. There, his impact was immediate, helping the club secure its first major trophy—the FA Cup—in May 2025.
On the international stage, Sarr has become a vital figure for the Senegal national team. He played a key role in their historic first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2021 and was honored by President Macky Sall for his contributions. By the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he cemented his legacy as an all-time top scorer for his country at the tournament, netting four goals and becoming one of the few African players to score three goals in a single group stage.
