How a Burkinabé right-back became a globetrotting force in professional European football
In short: Born in 2001, Issa Kaboré has navigated a rapid ascent through the European football landscape. From his professional beginnings in Belgium to high-profile loan spells across France, England, Portugal, and Germany, the Burkinabé defender has consistently adapted to new tactical environments while remaining a cornerstone of his national team.
Issa Kaboré, born on 12 May 2001, began his professional journey by signing with the Belgian club KV Mechelen in August 2019. His potential quickly caught the attention of Manchester City, which acquired him in July 2020. Rather than immediately joining the Premier League squad, Kaboré embarked on a series of strategic loan spells designed to refine his skills as a right-back and right wing-back. This path took him through Troyes in France, Marseille, Luton Town in the Premier League, Benfica in Portugal, and Werder Bremen in Germany.
His international career has been equally impactful. Kaboré debuted for the Burkina Faso national team in June 2019 during a friendly against DR Congo. He gained significant recognition during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Cameroon between January and February 2022. Despite not scoring, his defensive reliability and attacking flair were pivotal in helping Burkina Faso reach the semi-finals. His performance earned him the tournament's Best Young Player award, cementing his reputation as one of the most promising talents from the continent.
By September 2025, Kaboré joined the EFL Championship club Wrexham on loan. This move eventually culminated in a permanent transfer on 27 August 2026, when he signed a three-year contract with the club for a reported fee of £2 million. His transition to Wrexham was immediate, highlighted by a debut performance on 20 September 2025 where he provided two assists in a 3–2 victory over Norwich City. Today, Kaboré remains a vital figure for both his club and his country, continuing to build on his early international success, including his first senior goal scored against Djibouti in October 2021.
