The Missouri county that hosted two county seats and a president
In short: Jackson County, Missouri, is a geographical anomaly and a historical crossroads. It is one of only 33 U.S. Multiple county seats exist within these regions, which served as the origin for three major Westward Trails and saw the birth of a U.S. president. presidency.
Organized in 1826 and named for Andrew Jackson, the county serves as a primary gateway to the West. While Independence was the original county seat, the rapid expansion of the 19th century led to the rise of Kansas City. Despite Kansas City's eventual dominance, both towns remain official county seats today. This dual-seat status highlights a unique administrative structure within the state of Missouri.
The county's history is marked by intense religious and military conflict. In 1831, it was proclaimed the site of the 'New Jerusalem' by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This led to violent clashes with pro-slavery settlers from the upper South, eventually forcing the Mormons out of the state by 1839. During the Civil War, the area saw the 'Battle of Westport' in 1864, a Union victory that secured Northern control of Missouri.
The county also served as a political incubator. A $50,000,000 public works scheme, which created thousands of roles, was financed by local political leader Thomas Pendergast throughout the Great Depression. His protégé, Harry S. Truman, was elected as the county's Presiding Judge in 1926 before ascending to the presidency in 1945. Today, the county remains a major urban hub, with 95.7% of its 717,204 residents living in urban areas.
Modern Jackson County continues to grapple with its complex legacy. In 2024, residents voted on whether to remove statues of Andrew Jackson to address his history as a slave owner and his support for the Indian Removal Act. The county now balances its role as a cultural center for Jazz and Blues with ongoing efforts to revitalize historic districts like Westport and the 18th and Vine Historic District.
