The meteoric rise of England's youngest-ever cricket captain
In short: In just a few years, Jacob Bethell has transitioned from a schoolboy prodigy to a record-breaking international star. From scoring historic runs at Rugby School to becoming England's youngest captain, his rapid ascent through the ranks of professional cricket is redefining what it means to be a generational talent.
Born in Barbados on 23 October 2003, Jacob Bethell moved to the United Kingdom at age 12 to attend boarding school. His skill showed young; he earned the West Indies Under-15 competition player of the tournament award in 2017. His rapid development was further highlighted in 2021 when he scored 202 runs in a fixture for Rugby School, setting a modern-day record. After leaving Barbados, he attended Rugby School on a scholarship. During his time there, he was mentored by Mike Powell, the former Warwickshire captain.
Bethell's professional career has been marked by unprecedented speed. He made his senior international debut in September 2024 against Australia at Southampton. By August 2025, he was named the T20I captain for England's series against Ireland, making him the youngest player ever to lead the England side. He displays remarkable versatility, becoming the initial male cricketer to hit maiden centuries in international first-class, List A, and T20 matches. He currently represents Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix in domestic competitions. Additionally, he has played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League.
His statistical achievements continue to mount. By early 2026, he reached a unique milestone as the youngest individual to record a century across all three international formats: Test, ODI, and T20I. His landmark performances include a 154-run maiden Test century at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2026 and a rapid 105 runs against India during the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede. His career also includes a debut for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. He has also represented the England under-19 side.
