In short: As the fourth-busiest rail station in North America, Jamaica Station in Queens is a critical transit hub where over 200,000 passengers pass through daily. It serves as the primary junction for the Long Island Rail Road, connecting commuters to New York City terminals and the AirTrain to JFK Airport.

Located in Queens, New York City, Jamaica Station stands as the largest transit hub on Long Island. More than 1,000 trains traverse the station daily. The current facility, designed by Kenneth M. Murchison, was built between 1912 and 1913 to consolidate multiple branch lines, replacing two older depots: the original 1836 LIRR terminus and the Jamaica–Beaver Street station.

The station's layout is engineered for high-volume transfers. It features six high-level island platforms for LIRR trains and a separate, fully enclosed platform for the AirTrain JFK, which uses automatic train operation and platform screen doors. Since 2006, the complex has been modernized to include the Jamaica Control Center, which houses LIRR offices and MTA Police. Recent capacity improvements, including the 2020 opening of Platform F, were designed to increase service frequency and train speeds, though these changes have sparked debate by shifting Brooklyn-bound service to a shuttle model.

Looking forward, the station is set to expand its role in regional transit. By 2028, it is expected to serve as a stop for Amtrak’s Northeast Regional service to Ronkonkoma. This evolution continues a long history of infrastructure projects, such as the 1980s and 1990s renovation efforts and the 2001–2006 project that integrated the AirTrain. With ongoing investments, including a 2026 allocation for further design work, Jamaica Station remains a central, albeit constantly changing, node in the movement of people across the New York metropolitan region.
